In the past, Varni needle rugs were woven by the nomads of Azerbaijan and Mughan plains in Ardabil province and Azerbaijan. Due to the way of life, the nomads always had to move to summer cottages, they had to use carpets that were light and compact so that they could be transported more easily during migration, and for this reason, the weaving of rugs, especially needle rugs, among the nomads. Migration has been common. Carpets in different regions of Iran are divided into two main categories; Simple woven or double-sided rugs and needle-woven rugs or single-sided rugs. Needle rugs have different names in different regions of Iran, such as Sefere Kurdi in Khorasan, Shirki Pich in Kerman, Sumak in Azerbaijan, Varni in Ardabil, and Rend among Qashqai nomads. Needle rugs usually do not have a plan, but are formed mentally by the weaver. For this reason, each rug is unique and has no other example, and it is difficult to copy it.
